Okay, so I’ve been hitting the courts and the hardwood lately, trying to figure out which sport really pushes me more – tennis or basketball. Let me tell you, it’s been a real workout, both physically and mentally. I decided to start off with some tennis. I grabbed my racket, some balls, and headed to the local court.
First thing I did was work on my serve. Man, getting that little ball over the net and into that tiny box consistently? Not as easy as it looks on TV! I spent a good hour just practicing serves, over and over. My arm started to feel it, for sure.

Then, I practiced some forehands and backhands. Running side to side, trying to hit the ball with just the right amount of power and spin, I definitely broke a sweat. The hand-eye coordination needed is pretty intense. You have to react super fast and also have a sense of where you are on the court. I tried to keep a rally going, first by myself hitting against a wall, and then I roped in a friend for a few games. Let’s just say my legs were burning by the end of it.
- Serve practice – 1 hour
- Forehand/backhand drills – 1 hour
- Rallying and games – 2 hours
After a few days of tennis, I switched to basketball. I joined some pickup games at the park. Right away, I noticed the difference. Basketball is way more about constant running. It’s non-stop, back and forth, and then you need the energy to jump for a shot or a rebound. If you like to run, then basketball is your game.
Handling the ball was another challenge. Dribbling while running, passing to teammates, trying not to get the ball stolen – it’s a whole different skill set. Then you have to shoot, which is a workout in itself, especially when someone’s trying to block you. After that, I worked on some defense, trying to stay in front of my opponent, block shots, and grab rebounds. This was super tiring! I was gassed after an hour of playing. I played two games, each was around 30 minutes. But it was so intense that I couldn’t play any more than that.
Here’s what I think:
- Basketball is way more physical and has a lot of body contact. It’s also super fast-paced.
- Tennis needs a ton of hand-eye coordination and footwork, and it’s more about technique than body contact.
Honestly, both sports are tough in their own ways. I wouldn’t say one is “harder” than the other. I found that basketball was more physically draining, while tennis required more focus and precision. I pushed myself in both sports, and felt a huge sense of accomplishment. It really depends on what you’re looking for in a workout and what kind of skills you want to develop. I feel that I want it more in tennis. In the end, I think I am going to practice tennis more and more! It is really attractive. And it makes me stronger. I’ve got a new respect for both tennis players and basketball players, that’s for sure. They’re both demanding in their own ways, and it takes a lot of hard work to be good at either one.
