Now, let me tell ya about them baseball fielding positions. Oh, it’s real simple, ain’t no need for big words. You see, in baseball, every fella out there on the field has a number. They use them numbers so folks can tell who’s doin’ what. There’s nine players on the field, and each one got their own job to do. Let’s go through ’em one by one, so ya understand how it works.
Pitcher (1)

First, there’s the pitcher. That’s the fella on the mound, the one throwin’ the ball to the batter. He’s got a tough job, he’s gotta throw strikes and try to get the batter out. They call him number 1. You’ll always see him in the middle of the field. If the pitcher ain’t doin’ his job right, the whole team’s in trouble.
Catcher (2)

Right behind the pitcher, ya got the catcher. That’s number 2. The catcher squats behind the batter and catches the balls the pitcher throws. He’s also the one who tells the pitcher what kind of pitch to throw. He’s gotta be quick, ’cause if a ball gets past him, them runners can steal bases. Catchers gotta be tough too, ’cause they get hit with balls all the time.
First Baseman (3)

Over there at first base, you’ll see the first baseman. That’s number 3. His job is to catch the ball and get the runners out when they come runnin’ to first base. He’s gotta have good hands, ’cause a lot of balls get thrown his way. First base is an important spot, ya know. He’s always got his foot on the bag, waitin’ to catch the ball before the runner gets there.
Second Baseman (4)

Now, we got the second baseman, that’s number 4. He plays between first and second base. His job is to cover the area between those two bases and make sure no balls get through. He’s gotta work with the shortstop and the first baseman to make double plays. It’s a lotta runnin’, I tell ya.
Third Baseman (5)

Over at third base, ya got the third baseman, number 5. He’s gotta be ready for them hard-hit balls, ’cause them batters love to hit the ball down the third base line. He’s also gotta throw the ball real quick to first base if he wants to get the batter out. Third base is a hot spot, no doubt about it.
Shortstop (6)

Now, the shortstop is number 6. He’s right there between second and third base. He’s got a lot of ground to cover, so he’s usually one of the quickest guys on the field. He’s always movin’, tryin’ to get the ball and make plays. Shortstops gotta be smart too, ’cause they’re involved in a lot of double plays with the second baseman.
Left Fielder (7)

Out in left field, you got the left fielder, number 7. He’s out there coverin’ the left side of the outfield. When the ball gets hit high, he’s gotta run and catch it. Left fielders gotta have a strong arm too, ’cause sometimes they gotta throw the ball all the way to home plate.
Center Fielder (8)
In the middle of the outfield, you’ll find the center fielder. He’s number 8. He’s gotta be fast, ’cause he’s coverin’ a lotta ground out there. If the ball gets hit deep, he’s the one runnin’ to get it. Center fielders are usually the best outfielders, ’cause they gotta cover so much space.
Right Fielder (9)
Last but not least, there’s the right fielder, number 9. He’s coverin’ the right side of the outfield. Right fielders gotta have a good arm too, ’cause sometimes they gotta throw the ball a long way to third base or home plate. And don’t let anyone tell ya right field ain’t important, every spot on the field is important, ya know.
So there ya have it, them’s the nine positions on the baseball field. Each fella has his own job, and together they make sure the other team don’t score too many runs. Next time you watch a game, now you’ll know who’s where and why they’re standin’ there.
