Okay, so I’ve got these old tennis shoes, right? They’re totally worn out, holes everywhere, soles flapping… definitely not wearable anymore. I felt bad just tossing them in the trash, so I thought, “There’s gotta be a way to recycle these things!”
First, I checked the shoes themselves. Sometimes, there’s a little tag or something that gives you recycling info, but no luck this time. These were pretty basic, no fancy labels.

My Recycling Journey
Next, I did a simple google search. I typed in somthing like “where can i recycle old tennis shoes”. I looked for orgnizations or stores nearby.
- I found some general tips, like removing any really muddy parts or loose debris. Makes sense.
- I also learned that some shoe stores, especially athletic shoe stores, sometimes have take-back programs.
So, I called up a couple of local sporting goods stores. One of them, a big chain, said they had a bin specifically for old shoes! Score!
I cleaned up the shoes as best as I could, just knocking off the loose dirt and stuff. Didn’t want to make a mess in their bin.
Then, I drove over to the store and, sure enough, there it was – a big recycling bin, usually near the entrance. I dropped my old shoes in, and that was it!
Felt pretty good, knowing they weren’t going straight to a landfill. Hopefully, they’ll get turned into something new, like playground surfacing or something. It’s a small thing, but every little bit helps, right?
