Okay, so the other day, I was trying to figure out when my nephew’s high school football game would be over. I needed to pick him up, and I had other plans for later, you know, the usual juggling act. So, I started my little investigation.
First Attempt: The Obvious
First, I checked the school’s website. Thought it would be simple, right? Game schedule, start time, end time… Nope. Just the start time. Nothing about how long the game was expected to last. Seriously, who does that?

Digging Deeper
Next, I thought, “Okay, let’s get logical.” High school games, are they like college or professional games? So I start to calculate it. Usually, there are 4 quarters and each quarter is 12 minutes, I spent a few minutes figuring out the total game time.
- Four quarters x 12 minutes = 48 minutes for the whole game.
Realizing My Mistakes
Then it hit me. My calculation above was way off. There are so many things could happen during the games. Timeouts, injuries…So I took them into consideration.
- The halftime break: usually 15-20 minutes.
- Timeouts: Three per half for each team.
- Injuries or other unexpected delays.
My Final Guess
Taking the factors above into consideration, it gave me a final guess. The games could last 2.5 to 3 hours. And base on this, I could pick up my nephew at 9.30 pm since the game starts at 7.00 pm.
At last, I finished picking my nephew and everything went so well!
