Okay, so I’ve always loved the look of a baseball cap, but with long hair, it’s kinda been a struggle. It always felt like a choice: cute cap or decent hair day? Not both. But I was determined to figure this out, so here’s how I finally cracked the code on wearing a baseball cap with long hair without looking like a total mess.
The Prep Work (It’s Important!)
First things first, I started with my hair down. Seems obvious, but trust me, it matters. I brushed it out, making sure there were no major knots or tangles. This is key to avoiding that weird bumpy look under the cap later.

Then, I thought about what kind of style I wanted. Sometimes I go for a low ponytail, other times I like braids. Here’s a breakdown of what I tried:
- Low Ponytail: Super simple. I just gathered my hair at the nape of my neck and secured it with a hair tie. The trick is to keep it loose, not super tight.
- Single Braid: I parted my hair down the middle (or sometimes a side part, depending on my mood) and did a regular three-strand braid down my back.
- Double Braids (Pigtails): Same as the single braid, but I split my hair into two sections and braided each one.
Putting on the Cap (The Tricky Part)
This is where I used to mess up all the time. I’d just plop the cap on and hope for the best. Nope. That’s a recipe for disaster. Instead, I learned this little trick:
I flipped my head upside down, so all my hair was hanging towards the floor. Then, I carefully placed the cap on my head, making sure the back strap was positioned below my ponytail or braids. Once the cap was on, I gently flipped my head back up.
This made a HUGE difference! It prevented my hair from getting all bunched up at the back and created a much smoother look.
Adjusting and Finishing Touches
Once the cap was on, I made a few adjustments. I gently pulled on the sides of the cap to make sure it was sitting comfortably and not too tight. I also checked the back to make sure my ponytail or braids were hanging nicely and not caught on anything.

Sometimes, I like to pull a few strands of hair loose around my face to frame it a bit. This is totally optional, but I think it adds a nice, relaxed touch.
And that’s it! It took a bit of trial and error, but I finally figured out how to wear a baseball cap with long hair and still feel good about how I look. It’s all about the prep work and that little flip-your-head trick. Give it a try – it might just change your cap game forever!
