Alright, so you wanna know why them NBA fellas don’t do bank shots no more, huh? Well, lemme tell ya, it ain’t like it used to be back in the day. Things change, ya know? Like how they got them fancy phones now, and we used to just have that one phone on the wall for the whole darn neighborhood.
First off, them young fellas, they all about the flashy stuff. Dunks, three-pointers… that’s what gets the crowd going, and that’s what gets them on TV. Bank shots? Ain’t nothin’ pretty ’bout a bank shot. It’s just… bam! Ball goes in. No pizzazz, no nothin’.

But see, back in my day, them players, they knew how to use a bank shot. It was smart play, ya know? Like if you was close to the basket, but not right under it, a bank shot was a good bet. ‘Cause you ain’t gotta be perfect. You aim for that little square on the backboard, and the ball just bounces right in. Easier than tryin’ to shoot straight through that hoop, lemme tell ya.
- The game’s changed: These days, it’s all runnin’ and gunnin’. They want them fast breaks and them quick shots. Bank shots? They take a little more time, ya gotta line it up just right. Ain’t nobody got time for that no more, seems like.
- Analytics, they call it: These fellas with their fancy numbers, they say shootin’ threes is the best way to win. And layups, of course. Bank shots? They fall in that middle ground, that mid-range area. And them number crunchers, they say that’s the worst place to shoot from. Go figure.
I heard tell some of them smart fellas, the ones who talk on TV, they say that bank shots is more accurate for free throws. And some of the best shooters, they used to use bank shots all the time for their free throws. But now? Nah. Everybody wants to shoot it straight. Maybe they think it looks better, I dunno. But if it goes in, it goes in, right? Don’t matter how it gets there.
Another thing is, them young fellas, they strong. They can jump high, they can reach way up there. They don’t need no bank shot to get the ball over the rim. They can just power it right through. Back in my day, we had to be a little more clever, ya know? We had to use our brains, not just our muscles.
And you know what else? Practice. You gotta practice bank shots to be good at ’em. And if nobody’s teachin’ these young fellas how to do it, and they ain’t practicin’ it, then of course they ain’t gonna use it in a game. It’s like bakin’ a cake, if you ain’t never seen nobody bake a cake, and you ain’t never tried it yourself, you gonna make a mess of it, that’s for sure.
So there you have it. That’s why them NBA players don’t do bank shots much no more. It’s a shame, really. It’s a good shot, a smart shot. But the game’s changed, and them players, they changed with it. Maybe someday it’ll come back in style, ya never know. But for now, it’s all dunks and threes, and them bank shots, they just gatherin’ dust.

It ain’t just about showin’ off, though. It’s about what works. And right now, what works is runnin’ fast, shootin’ threes, and gettin’ to the rim. Bank shots? They just don’t fit in with that style of play. But I still think they got their place. Sometimes, a simple bank shot is the best shot you can take. But what do I know? I’m just an old lady watchin’ the game.
Anyways, that’s what I think about it. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe I’m right. But that’s how I see it, plain and simple.
