Alright, listen up, y’all. You wanna be one of them big shot NBA GMs, huh? It ain’t gonna be a walk in the park, lemme tell ya. First off, you gotta know your basketball, and I ain’t talkin’ ’bout just watchin’ games on TV. You gotta really know it, inside and out. Like, who’s good at dribblin’, who can shoot the lights out, and who’s just plain lazy on the court.
Now, some of these GM fellas, they used to play ball themselves, or maybe they were coaches. That makes sense, I guess. They know the game from bein’ in it. But then there’s others, the ones with all them fancy degrees. Sports somethin’-or-other, law, or even that number crunchin’ stuff, “data ‘nalytics,” they call it. Sounds complicated to me, but hey, if it gets you the job, who am I to judge?

You see, bein’ a GM, it’s more than just pickin’ players. You gotta wheel and deal, make trades, and figure out who to pay how much. It’s like bargainin’ at the flea market, but with millions of dollars and folks yellin’ at ya from the stands. And let me tell ya, them contracts, they’re somethin’ else. You gotta know how to talk to these players and their agents, make sure you ain’t gettin’ ripped off.
- You gotta understand the rules of the game, inside and out. Not just the fouls and the timeouts, but the money stuff too, like the salary cap and all that.
- You gotta be able to spot talent. See that kid nobody else is lookin’ at, and know he’s gonna be a star. That’s a gift, I tell ya.
- You gotta be tough. Gotta make hard decisions, and stick to ’em, even when folks are screamin’ at ya.
And the money? Well, they make a pretty penny, that’s for sure. Heard tell they make somethin’ like two hundred and forty thousand dollars a year. That’s a whole lotta hay, if you ask me. But don’t think it’s easy money. These folks work long hours, watchin’ games, talkin’ on the phone, travelin’ all over the place. It’s a grind, just like farmin’, but with a basketball instead of a plow.
So, how do you get there? Well, there ain’t no one way, that’s for sure. Some folks start at the bottom, maybe workin’ for a team in some small job, and work their way up. Others, they got them fancy degrees and connections. But one thing’s for sure, you gotta be passionate about it. You gotta love basketball, and you gotta be willin’ to work your tail off. It’s like plantin’ a garden; you gotta put in the work, water it, and take care of it, before you can harvest the fruits. They say some of them GMs even started out just managin’ the equipment or somethin’, then they learned the ropes and moved on up. It’s all about gettin’ your foot in the door, I reckon.
And you gotta be smart, too. Not just book smart, but street smart. Gotta be able to read people, know when they’re tellin’ the truth and when they’re lyin’. And you gotta be able to think on your feet, make quick decisions under pressure. It’s like when the rooster crows, you gotta be ready to go. No time for lollygagging.
You know, this reminds me of that fella, Sam Presti, the one who runs the Thunder team. Heard he went to some college in Massachusetts, studied somethin’ called “communication.” See? It ain’t always about basketball. Sometimes it’s about talkin’ to people, building relationships. It’s like being the mayor of a small town, but instead of potholes, you’re dealing with point guards.

So, if you really wanna be an NBA GM, you gotta be prepared to work hard, learn a lot, and be tougher than a two-dollar steak. It’s a long road, but if you got the passion and the smarts, you just might make it. Just remember, it ain’t all glitz and glamour. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it, right?
And one last thing. Don’t forget where you come from. Even if you make it big, remember the folks who helped you along the way. That’s the most important thing of all, no matter what you do in life.
