Well, let me tell ya somethin’ ’bout them basketball rims them fellas in the NBA use. You know, the ones them tall boys throw that ball into?
Them rims gotta be exactly 10 feet high. That’s like, taller than my old man was, and he was a big fella! Yep, 10 feet right up in the air. They measure it from the floor, you see, all the way up to the tippy-top of the rim. Can you imagine climbin’ up there? I sure can’t, my old bones ain’t what they used to be.

Now, they been doin’ it like this for a long, long time. Since way back when, when the NBA fella’s first started playin’. Some folks say it’s been 10 feet since nineteen forty-somethin’. That’s a whole lotta years, ain’t it? They ain’t changed it none, not even a little bit. And that’s a good thing, I reckon. Keeps things fair, you know? Everybody playin’ on the same kinda hoop.
- 10 feet high it is!
- From the floor to the top, mind you.
- Same for all them NBA fellas.
You see, it ain’t just the NBA that does it this way. Them college boys, and even them folks playin’ all over the world, they use the same 10-foot rims too. Makes sense, I guess. If everyone’s playin’ on the same height hoop, then it’s a fair game, right? That’s what they tell me, anyhow.
Now, why 10 feet, you ask? Well, I ain’t rightly sure. Some folks say it’s just always been that way. Maybe some smart fella a long time ago figured that was a good height. High enough to make it a challenge, but not so high that nobody could make a shot. Sounds about right to me.
This whole 10-foot thing, it ain’t just for them fancy games on TV, you know. You go to any park, any gym, you gonna find hoops that are pretty close to 10 feet high. Maybe a little off here and there, but mostly they try to keep it the same. Even them kids in junior high, they playin’ on 10-foot hoops. Gotta start ‘em young, I guess!
It’s important, this 10-foot height. It changes how the fellas play, the way they run around, the kind of shots they take. Them coaches, they gotta think about it too. Gotta figure out how to get that ball in the hoop when it’s way up there. And them players, they gotta practice and practice, gettin’ strong enough to jump high and throw that ball just right.

Think about it, if that hoop was lower, it’d be a whole different game, wouldn’t it? Everybody would be dunkin’ all the time, maybe. Or if it was higher, maybe nobody could make a shot! So, 10 feet, that’s the magic number. Keeps things interestin’, keeps things fair.
Now, some folks might tell ya that in some places, they use shorter hoops for little kids. That makes sense, I guess. Little tykes can’t be throwin’ a ball way up to 10 feet, can they? But once they get bigger, they gotta learn to play on the real hoops, the 10-footers. That’s how they do it in the NBA, and that’s how they do it pretty much everywhere else too.
So, there ya have it. How high is a NBA basketball rim? It’s 10 feet high. Plain and simple. Don’t let nobody tell ya different. And it’s been that way for a good long time, and I reckon it’ll stay that way for a good long time to come. It’s just the way it is, and that’s all there is to it.
