Okay, so the other day I was watching a tennis match and it got me thinking, “How high is a tennis net actually?” I mean, we see these players slamming the ball over it all the time, but I never really stopped to consider the actual height. So, I decided to do a little digging and measuring myself.
First, I did some research online. I found out that the International Tennis Federation (ITF) has some rules about this. Apparently, the net is supposed to be 42 inches high at the posts and 36 inches high in the center. Honestly, I didn’t even realize there was a difference! It’s lower in the middle. Who knew?

But just reading about it wasn’t enough for me. I wanted to see it firsthand. So, I grabbed my measuring tape and headed to a local tennis court. The net posts were easy enough to measure – I just stretched out my tape measure and yep, right around 42 inches. But getting the center height was a bit trickier since it hangs down and I need to measure it straightly.
I found a stick on the ground and used it to prop up the net in the middle to try to get a straight line for measuring. I stretched my tape measure from the ground up to the top of the net in the center. And guess what? It was pretty much bang on 36 inches, just like the official rules say. I also found that most shots are played at least 1 meter above the net!
I also tried to measure the cord that holds the net up. I took out my tape measure, and tried to attach it to the top of the net post. The cord is attached to an upright bar, and when I measured it, it was around 6 inches. It seems pretty accurate.
So there you have it. A little hands-on investigation to satisfy my curiosity. It’s kind of cool to know that there are official rules about this stuff, and even cooler to see that they’re followed on the courts where we play. Now, back to practicing my serve – gotta get that ball over that 36-inch barrier!
