Alright, so, I’ve been messing around with this “who are ya” thing in football. It all started when I stumbled upon this book, “Who are ya, who are ya, who are we?” by some guy named Andrew. Got me thinking, what’s the deal with all these chants?
First, I started digging into why fans even do these chants. Turns out, it’s like their way of showing pride, pumping up their team, and getting into the whole spirit of the game. I watched a bunch of videos online, and man, some of these chants are wild! They can be hilarious, or sometimes, not so much, haha.

Then I got curious about specific chants. Like, I heard about this “Skol” thing the Minnesota Vikings do. It’s pretty intense, gives you chills. Apparently, they got it from Icelandic soccer. Who knew?
- Started checking out different team chants.
- Watched a ton of videos online.
- Looked up the “Skol” chant.
And there’s this one song, “Poor Scouser Tommy,” which is apparently super unique. I listened to it, and yeah, it’s nothing like the usual fast-paced stuff you hear nowadays.
Then I dove into the history of “who are ya?” itself. Seems like it’s a way of kinda dissing the other team, like asking “who even are you guys, and why are you here?” It’s a bit harsh, but I guess that’s part of the game, right?
- Listened to “Poor Scouser Tommy.”
- Read about the history of “who are ya?”
Where do these chants come from?
Most of them are actually based on popular music. Like, in the UK, they use old songs like “My Old Man (Said Follow the Van)” and “Knees Up Mother Brown” – it’s kinda funny when you think about it. “Everywhere We Go” is another popular one. It’s simple but catchy. And “On The Ball” is a classic, I found that one a lot when I was searching.
So yeah, that’s basically my little journey into the world of football chants. I didn’t realize how much history and meaning there was behind these things. I guess it started out as just some fun chants and turned into a part of the football culture, especially with the “who are ya?” phrase being a total diss. It’s way more than just words, it is all about the passion and the rivalry.
- Realized chants are based on popular music.
- Understood the cultural significance of chants.
It has been a wild ride, but hey, now I know a little bit more about this crazy world of football!
