Hey everyone, today I wanted to dive into something that’s been bugging me for a while: what’s the highest-scoring game in NFL history? I mean, we all love those nail-biting, down-to-the-wire games, but sometimes it’s fun to see a real points explosion, right?
So, I started digging around, just poking through the internet to see what I could find. First I just did a general search online and looked for some info.

Turns out, the real barn-burner was way back in 1966. Can you believe it? The Washington Redskins (yeah, they were still called that back then) and the New York Giants went at it, and the final score was a ridiculous 72-41.
- Washington Redskins vs. New York Giants, 1966: 72-41, for a total of 113 points.
That’s a combined 113 points! I did some more searching and found some other games’ scores, just to get a sense of how crazy that Redskins-Giants game really was.
I also found that the biggest blowout in a regular-season game was back in 1920. Some team called the Rochester Jeffersons destroyed Fort Porter (which wasn’t even an NFL team) 66-0. And the biggest win between two actual NFL teams was in 1934.
Also, this game in 1966 had 16 touchdowns in total. That’s nuts! It includes a fumble return, an interception return, and a punt return. All those were by Washington. It was in Week 12 of the 1966 season.
There was also another game, but it was in the AFL, which was a different league back then. This one had over 100 points too. The Oakland Raiders and the Houston Oilers in 1963. The final score was 52-49.

- Oakland Raiders vs. Houston Oilers, 1963: 52-49, for a total of 101 points.
I also learned that it’s impossible to have certain scores, like 1-1, 1-0, 2-1, 3-1, 4-1, 5-1, and 7-1. There are some rules for scoring, apparently, that make these scores not possible.
Oh, and the highest-scoring Super Bowl? That was Super Bowl XXIX, back in ’95. The 49ers beat the Chargers 49-26.
- San Francisco 49ers vs. San Diego Chargers, Super Bowl XXIX: 49-26.
But yeah, that Redskins-Giants game is the real king of high scores. Imagine being at that game! It must have been wild. Anyway, I just thought I’d share my little research project with y’all. It’s always fun to learn these random sports facts, you know?
So, that’s all I’ve found. It was a long journey, but pretty worth it.
