Okay, so, I’ve got this baseball cap, right? It’s been my go-to for a while now, but the sun has not been kind to it. It used to be this sharp navy blue, and now it’s just, well, sad and faded, especially on the brim. So, I thought, “Why not try to restore it?” I figured dyeing it back to its original color would be a fun little project.
First, I gathered all the stuff I needed. I got a big plastic tub, some navy blue dye, rubber gloves (didn’t want blue hands), and an old spoon for stirring. I also made sure I had some old towels around in case things got messy, which, knowing me, they probably would.

I filled the tub with hot water, as hot as my tap could go. Then, I dunked the cap in the water, making sure it was completely soaked. I took it out and poured the dye into the water, stirring it around to make sure it was all mixed in.
Next, I carefully put the cap back into the dye bath. I swirled it around a bit, making sure every part of the cap was getting a good soak. Then came the waiting game. I left it in there for about an hour, checking on it every now and then and giving it another swirl for good measure.
- Fill tub with hot water
- Soak the cap
- Add dye to water
- Submerge cap in dye bath
- Wait and occasionally stir
Once the time was up, I pulled the cap out, rinsed it under cold water until the water ran clear. It’s a bit of a pain, but you gotta do it to get all that extra dye out.
Finally, I laid it flat on a towel to dry, reshaping it a bit so it would dry nicely. I didn’t want to toss it in the dryer because I was worried about it shrinking or something.
And guess what? It actually worked! The cap is now back to a nice, even navy blue. Sure, it might not be exactly like new, but it’s way better than that faded mess it was before.

Result
It’s pretty cool how you can just give new life to something with a little bit of effort and some dye. I’m definitely going to be more careful about leaving my cap out in the sun from now on, though! Overall, I’m pretty stoked with how it turned out. It was a fun little experiment, and now I’ve got my favorite cap back in action!
