Alright, so the other day I was thinking, “Hey, I’m going to an NBA game, can I bring my camera?” I mean, I wanted to snap some cool shots, you know? Not just phone pics, but real, decent photos.
So, first thing I did was I grabbed my phone and hit up the official website of the arena where the game was gonna be. I figured they’d have some rules posted, and I was right. Most arenas have a “bag policy” and a “prohibited items” section, and you gotta dig through those.

It was a bit of a maze, I am not gonna lie. I scrolled, and scrolled, and finally found the camera policy. Turns out, it’s kinda vague.
Then I tried to contact NBA, but it was useless, I got no answer.
So, plan B! I decided to check out some NBA forums and fan groups online. You know, see what other people’s experiences were. That’s where things got interesting.
- Some folks said they breezed right in with their DSLRs, no problem.
- Others talked about getting their lenses confiscated, or even being turned away at the door.
- One guy even mentioned that it might depend on the security guard you get!
It was all pretty mixed, and I was starting to get a little worried. I didn’t want to lug my camera all the way there just to have it taken away.
Finally, I decided to just go for it. I packed my camera, but with a smaller lens—nothing too crazy. I also made sure to put it in a clear bag, just to make things easier for security.
When I got to the arena, I went through the security line, fully expecting to have to explain myself. But, you know what? The guy barely glanced at my bag. He just waved me through! I guess I got lucky, I got a nice security guard, hah.
So, I got to take some awesome pictures during the game! It was totally worth it. But, honestly, it’s a bit of a gamble. Based on my little adventure, here’s the deal:
My tips:
- Check the Specific Arena Rules First!
- Don’t be silly and take a super huge lens.
- Clear Bag it, it just might make security life easier.
- Be polite and Ready to explain yourself if you are questioned.
- Keep in mind that, it might just depend on the day.
Good luck, and hopefully, you’ll get some killer shots!
