Man, I’ve been hitting the gym a lot lately, and I got this wild idea stuck in my head. I’m no boxer, just a regular dude who likes to punch things in a controlled environment, you know? So, I got to wondering about this thing called a “Superman punch.” Sounds cool, right? Like something straight out of a comic book.
I went down this rabbit hole, trying to figure out if this move is even allowed in boxing. First, I hit up some online forums. Lots of keyboard warriors arguing about it. Some said it’s totally fine, others were like, “Nah, that’s illegal!” I even stumbled upon some articles talking about how it’s allowed as long as you don’t aim below the belt. Yeah, I also watched a few videos of some mixed martial arts guys doing it, but it looks a lot different than what I imagined.

So, I decided to try it out myself. Not on a person, obviously! I went to my gym, found a heavy bag, and started experimenting. I tried to mimic what I saw online, you know, faking a low kick and then jumping into a punch. Let me tell you, it’s harder than it looks! I felt like a clumsy idiot, flailing around. I did manage to land a few, but it didn’t feel like I was getting any extra power from the jump.
I also talked to one of the trainers at my gym. He’s an older guy, been around the block. He chuckled when I asked him about the Superman punch. He said it’s technically legal, but most serious boxers don’t use it because it’s too easy to see coming. He showed me the basic stance and how to throw a proper punch, focusing on using your whole body, not just your arms. He also warned me not to hold the ropes for leverage when throwing punches.
After all that, here’s what I figured out:
- Yes, the Superman punch is allowed in boxing, as long as you don’t hit below the belt or do any other illegal stuff like hitting the back of the head or using the ropes for leverage.
- It’s not really practical. It’s more of a flashy move than a powerful one.
- I need to stick to the basics and work on my technique before I try anything fancy.
I’m still curious about it, though. Maybe one day, after I actually learn how to box properly, I’ll give it another shot. But for now, I’ll leave the Superman stuff to the comic books and the MMA fighters. My heavy bag is safe from my clumsy attempts at flying punches, at least for now. I reckon I’ll keep practicing, though. Who knows, maybe I’ll surprise myself.
