Alright, so you wanna know what this “DNP” thing means in football, huh? Well, lemme tell ya, it ain’t nothin’ fancy. It just means “Did Not Play.” Yep, that’s it. If a fella don’t get his boots on the field, don’t get to runnin’ around and smashin’ into other fellas, he gets a big ol’ DNP next to his name.
Now, why wouldn’t a fella play? Lots of reasons, I tell ya. Maybe he’s got a boo-boo, you know, hurt his leg or somethin’. Injuries, they call ’em. Happens all the time, them boys are always bangin’ into each other. Like that time our neighbor’s boy, Billy, tried to tackle a cow and ended up with a bum knee. Couldn’t walk straight for a month, he couldn’t.

Sometimes, it ain’t nothin’ wrong with the fella, it’s just the coach, you see. The coach, he’s the boss man, he decides who plays and who sits on the bench. They call that a “Coach’s Decision,” or DNP-CD if you wanna get all fancy-pants about it. Like when my grandson was playin’ little league, the coach wouldn’t let him play quarterback ’cause he said he threw like a girl. Can you believe that? My grandson throws just fine!
- Injury: Player’s got a boo-boo, can’t play.
- Coach’s Decision: Coach says “sit down, son.”
- Illness: Player’s got the sniffles or somethin’ worse.
- Not on the Roster: Fella ain’t even on the team, so he sure ain’t playin’.
And sometimes, a fella just ain’t feelin’ well. Got the flu, maybe, or somethin’ worse. Illness, that’s another reason for a DNP. Remember that time everyone in town got the stomach flu after eatin’ old Bessie’s potato salad at the church picnic? Nobody was doin’ nothin’ for a week, let me tell ya.
Then there’s the fellas that ain’t even on the team, the ones that didn’t make the cut. They definitely ain’t playin’, so they get a DNP too. It’s like tryin’ to bake a cake without flour, you just can’t do it. You gotta be on the team to play, simple as that. Or maybe the game got called off, you know, canceled or postponed because of bad weather or somethin’. Then nobody plays, and everyone gets a DNP.
Now, this DNP thing, it matters in them fantasy football games too. I don’t know much about that fancy stuff, but my nephew, he’s always fiddlin’ with his phone, lookin’ at scores and whatnot. He says if your player gets a DNP, you don’t get no points for him. Makes sense, I guess. Can’t score if you ain’t playin’. Though sometimes, they give you a little somethin’, like half a point, just for showin’ up, I reckon.
So, there you have it. DNP, it just means “Did Not Play.” Ain’t nothin’ complicated about it. It’s just a way of sayin’ a fella didn’t get to play the game, for whatever reason. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make some supper. Got a hankerin’ for some fried chicken and mashed potatoes.

And don’t you go thinkin’ this DNP thing is the end of the world. Just ’cause a fella didn’t play one game don’t mean he won’t play the next. He just gotta get himself healthy, or convince the coach he’s worth puttin’ on the field. It’s like life, you know? Sometimes you’re in the game, sometimes you’re on the sidelines. You just gotta keep on keepin’ on.
Average Draft Position (ADP) is somethin’ else them fantasy folks talk about. It’s where fellas usually get picked in the draft, see? But that ain’t got nothin’ to do with DNP, that’s just about pickin’ your team. Just remember, DNP means the fella didn’t play. And that’s all there is to it.
