Hey everyone, it’s your boy back again with another one of my experiments. Today’s topic got me thinking: does height matter in baseball? I mean, we see all these tall dudes out there on the field, but is that really what makes a good baseball player?
So, I started digging around, just trying to get a feel for what people are saying. I saw some stuff about how height isn’t the main thing when it comes to running bases. It’s more about, you know, being fast, agile, having quick reflexes, and knowing the game inside and out. Also, it seems like height isn’t that critical for just playing the game in general. Skills and agility seemed to pop up a lot in what I was finding.

But then I found some other stuff that made it seem like height might actually be a big deal. Like, there are these towering figures, right? And these articles were saying that while height helps, it isn’t the only reason they’re good. I even saw something about how nowadays, teams are really into drafting taller players. That got me thinking, maybe there’s more to this height thing than I first thought.
Then I got curious and decided to do a little experiment of my own. First, I started watching a bunch of games, trying to see if I could spot any patterns. I mean, I’m no expert, but I figured I could at least try to see if taller players were doing better than shorter ones. It was tough, I’m not gonna lie. Everyone’s moving so fast, and there’s so much going on. But I did notice that taller pitchers seemed to have an easier time throwing the ball, maybe because of their longer reach or something.
I also went to a few local games, just to get a different perspective. It was cool seeing the game up close, and I started to notice that shorter players, especially those playing second base, were super quick and agile. They were all over the place, fielding those hard-hit balls like it was nothing. So, it seemed like being shorter could be an advantage in certain positions.
After watching all those games, I decided to collect some data. I found this list of player heights from some league and started crunching some numbers. Here’s what I found:
- 5-03″ (2 players)
- 5-04″ (8 players)
- 5-05″ (15 players)
- 5-06″ (47 players)
- 5-07″ (88 players)
- 5-08″ (136 players)
- 5-09″ (182 players)
- 5-10″ (410 players)
- 5-11″ (292 players)
- 6-00″ (102 players)
- 6-01″ (153 players)
- 6-02″ (78 players)
- 6-03″ (33 players)
- 6-04″ (13 players)
It was interesting to see that there were way more players around the 5-10″ to 5-11″ mark. But there were also a good number of taller players, especially those over 6 feet.

So, what did I learn from all this? Well, it seems like height can be a factor in baseball, but it’s not the only thing that matters. Taller players might have some advantages, like a longer reach, but shorter players can be super quick and agile. And at the end of the day, it’s really about your skills, your understanding of the game, and how hard you work. I don’t know about everyone else, but this little experiment really opened my eyes to how complex this sport is. Height is just one piece of the puzzle, and there are so many other things that make a great baseball player.
If you guys have any thoughts about this topic, I’d love to hear from you in the comments.
