Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about this NBA and their games, especially ’round Thanksgiving. You know, that time of year when folks are stuffin’ their faces with turkey and all that good fixin’s.
Do them basketball fellas play on Thanksgiving? Nope, they sure don’t. And I’ll tell ya why, or at least what I heard tell. It ain’t no big secret or nothin’. They just don’t wanna mess with them football guys.

You see, football, that NFL, they got a real stranglehold on Thanksgiving. Everybody and their grandma’s watchin’ football that day. So, the NBA, they’re smart, I guess. They figure, “Why bother fightin’ it? Let them football fellas have their day.” Makes sense, I reckon. You don’t wanna go up against a giant, right? You’d just get squashed like a bug.
It’s like this, you got this big ol’ pie, right? And football, they already got most of it on Thanksgiving. The NBA, they could try and grab a little sliver, but it’d be a whole lotta work for not much pie. They’d rather wait for another day when they can have a bigger piece, you know? Like Christmas. Now, them basketball boys, they play on Christmas. That’s their time to shine, I guess.
- Thanksgiving? No NBA.
- Christmas? NBA all the way.
- Black Friday? Yep, they play then too. Guess they figure folks are done shoppin’ and ready for some hoops.
I heard tell there’s a few other days they don’t play neither. Christmas Eve, makes sense, folks are gettin’ ready for Santa and all. Election Day, well, I guess folks are busy votin’ and such. And then there’s that college basketball championship game day. Can’t be steppin’ on them college kids’ toes, I suppose.
This year, the NBA season, it started up in October, and it goes all the way to April. That’s a long time, ain’t it? And they got this new thing they did last year and they doin’ it again this year, some kind of in-season tournament. I don’t rightly know what that’s all about, but it sounds fancy. They played a few of them tournament games on November 21st this year, but not on Thanksgiving, no sir.
So, if you’re plannin’ on watchin’ some basketball on Thanksgiving, you’re outta luck. You gonna have to settle for football, or maybe just watch them old movies. Or, you know, spend time with your family. That’s what Thanksgiving’s all about, ain’t it? Bein’ thankful and eatin’ good food. Them basketball fellas, they can have their day another time. They’ll be back on the court soon enough, don’t you worry.

This year, 2024, ain’t no different. They started playin’ in October, and they gonna keep on goin’ till April next year. But Thanksgiving? Nope. They takin’ a break. Lettin’ them football fellas have their fun. And then, come Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, them basketball boys will be back at it, runnin’ and jumpin’ and throwin’ that ball around.
So, there you have it. The long and short of it. No NBA games on Thanksgiving. It’s all about football that day. But don’t you worry, them basketball games will be back soon enough. They got a whole lotta games to play, from October all the way to April. And who knows, maybe one of these days they’ll decide to play on Thanksgiving after all. But for now, it’s football’s day, and that’s just the way it is.
And you know what? That’s just fine by me. Gives me more time to eat my pumpkin pie.
