Alright, so, let’s talk about that A&M football back in 2012. You know, that year things got real interestin’. They switched over to somethin’ called the SEC, which, lemme tell ya, sounded like a big deal. Folks were buzzin’ ‘bout it like bees ‘round a honeypot.
Now, I ain’t no fancy football expert, ya hear? But even I could tell this was a big change. See, they used to play with them Texas Longhorns all the time, a big rivalry it was. But then, poof! Gone. They went their separate ways, like kids squabblin’ on the playground. Heard it was somethin’ ‘bout conferences and whatnot, sounds complicated if ya ask me. Too much thinkin’ for my old head.

That year, they got themselves a new coach, some fella named Kevin Sumlin. First year, he was. People were kinda holdin’ their breath, wonderin’ if he was gonna be any good. But you know what? That team, they played pretty darn good! Scored a whole heap of points, they did. I remember hearin’ on the radio, they were puttin’ up big numbers, like 40 somethin’ points a game. That’s a lot, even for someone like me who don’t know much.
- They had this fella, Kent, real good at hittin’ that ball, I tell ya. Folks were singin’ his praises all over town. He was a big reason they got to somethin’ called Omaha, sounded important.
- And that schedule, my oh my, it was packed tighter than a pickle jar. Every week, seems like, they were playin’ somebody new. ESPN was always talkin’ about ’em. Even I could find their games on the TV, though sometimes I had to ask my grandson to find the right channel.
I remember watchin’ bits and pieces of the games. All that runnin’ and throwin’, it was somethin’ else. They had fellas runnin’ with the ball, and others throwin’ it way up high. And then, BAM! Someone would catch it and run some more. It was excitin’, I gotta say. And the crowds, they were somethin’ else too. All those people cheerin’ and yellin’, made me feel kinda young again, just watchin’ it.
They kept track of all sorts of things, too. How many times they ran with the ball, how many times they threw it, even how many times they got penalized. I don’t understand all them numbers, but I guess it’s important for them football folks. They even had a whole list of players, like a phone book, almost. Every fella on the team, right there in black and white.
2012, it was a year of firsts, you know? First year in that new SEC thing, first year with that new coach. And they did pretty good, from what I could tell. Won some games, lost some games, but they always played hard. That’s what matters, ain’t it? Givin’ it your all, even when things get tough.
They played a bunch of games that year, all across the country, I reckon. Saturdays were football days, that’s for sure. You could hear the cheers from blocks away, even with my hearin’ not bein’ what it used to be. It was a real community thing, everyone comin’ together to root for the team. Made ya feel like you were part of somethin’ bigger, ya know?

So, yeah, 2012 A&M football. A year of change, a year of excitement, and a year of good ol’ fashioned football. They played their hearts out, those boys did. And even though I ain’t no expert, I could appreciate that. It was somethin’ special, that’s for sure. Makes ya proud, even if ya don’t know a touchdown from a touchback.
They had a website, I heard, where they put all the scores and stuff. My grandson showed it to me once, but all them numbers and fancy words just made my head spin. I’ll stick to the radio and the TV, thank you very much. Easier for an old gal like me to keep up.
All in all, that 2012 season was a hoot. A real barn burner, as they say. And even though I’m just a simple old lady, I enjoyed watchin’ them Aggies play. They gave us somethin’ to cheer about, that’s for sure. And that, in my book, is what matters most.
