Okay, so the other day, I was watching a football game and checking out the stats, and I kept seeing this “Att” abbreviation. I was like, “What the heck does that even mean?” I’ve seen it a bunch of times before, but I finally decided to figure it out.
First, I tried to guess. Maybe it was “attention” or “attitude”? Nah, those didn’t make any sense in the context of football stats. So, I did what any normal person would do – I hit up the internet.

I started poking around on some football stat websites. It took a little digging, but I finally found it. Turns out, “Att” simply stands for “Attempts.” It’s not some super complicated thing.
It changes the meaning slightly, depends on the table, for example:
- Rushing Table: “Att” means the number of times a player tried to run the ball. Like, how many carries they had.
- Passing Table: “Att” refers to the number of times the quarterback tried to throw the ball, completed or not.
I also discovered that from around 1994, many websites have started to record this data.
So, there you have it! It’s pretty straightforward. Now, when I see “Att” on a stat sheet, I won’t be confused anymore. I can just check the table to clarify it’s mean, Rushing attempts? Or passing attempts?
I’ll know exactly what it means. Mystery solved!
