Well, talkin’ ’bout the 40-yard dash for 8-year-olds, lemme tell ya, them little kids ain’t as fast as the big fellas, that’s for sure. Now, the average time, from what folks been sayin’, is ‘round 8.5 to 9.5 seconds. That’s just about right for this age, since they’re still growin’ and their muscles ain’t fully developed yet. Boys, especially, might be runnin’ in this range, but it ain’t set in stone ‘cause, ya know, some kids might be faster if they’ve been runnin’ around more or playin’ sports.
Now, let’s not forget, these young’uns are just startin’ out. They ain’t got the same strength or skills as the older kids or them big football players. The body just ain’t ready for all that power yet. It’s kinda like a plant growin’, ya know? You can’t expect a sprout to grow as fast as a big ol’ tree, but give it time and it’ll get there.

Why kids this age ain’t so fast?
Well, first of all, like I said, it’s all ‘bout them muscles. At 8 years old, kids ain’t got the muscle mass to push off the ground as hard. So, when they take off, they just ain’t got the same power as someone who’s 18 or 20. And then, it’s also ‘bout learnin’ how to run right. It ain’t just about speed, it’s about knowin’ how to sprint, use them legs, and pump them arms. Most 8-year-olds ain’t had no fancy coachin’, so they’re just runnin’ with what they know, which ain’t much more than runnin’ around the playground.
But I tell ya, even with them slower times, it’s still pretty impressive to see these little ones givin’ it their all. Some of ‘em, with a little bit of practice, might even get faster. Ya got kids who love sports, who maybe been kickin’ a ball or chasin’ each other all day long, and they might have a bit of an edge. But for the average 8-year-old, we’re lookin’ at those 8.5 to 9.5 seconds, more or less.
- Some 8-year-olds, if they’re really active, might be closer to that 8.5-second mark.
- Others, who ain’t doin’ much runnin’, might be pushin’ closer to 9.5 seconds.
- And if they’re just startin’, well, it might be even slower at first.
Comparin’ to older kids
If we look at older kids, like them high school boys or even the college athletes, they’re runnin’ a whole lot faster. Some high schoolers might be runnin’ their 40-yard dash in ‘bout 4.8 to 5.2 seconds, which is almost half the time of an 8-year-old. And that’s ‘cause, by then, they’ve grown stronger, and they’ve learned how to sprint better. It just comes with age and practice.

But when they’re just 8, it’s all about havin’ fun and gettin’ out there to run. They ain’t worried ‘bout breakin’ no records or gettin’ them super-fast times. Most of the time, it’s just ‘bout enjoyin’ the game, whether they’re playin’ football, soccer, or just runnin’ around for the fun of it. So, if your kiddo’s runnin’ ‘round 9 seconds, don’t worry too much, they’re doin’ just fine!
Can they get faster?
Oh, sure they can! With a bit of practice and some proper runnin’ tips, them kids can shave off some time. Maybe not a whole lot, but enough to see a difference. Teachin’ them how to move them legs quicker, pump them arms, and push off with more strength can help. But at the end of the day, they’ll naturally get faster as they grow older and stronger. There ain’t no rush for them to be speedin’ like the big boys yet.
So, if your little one is runnin’ that 40-yard dash around 9 seconds, give ‘em a pat on the back! They’re still young and got plenty of time to grow and improve. Just keep ‘em active and havin’ fun, and who knows? Maybe one day, they’ll be one of them big sprinters, hittin’ that finish line in no time.
