Yesterday, my buddy asked me, “How long does a tennis game last?” I was like, “Good question!” So I started to figure it out.
First, I tried to remember how long my own tennis matches usually go. Sometimes they’re pretty quick, sometimes they drag on forever, it is really hard to say. So just recalling wasn’t gonna cut it. Then, I started to look it up on the internet.

I opened my laptop and started browsing. I spent like, maybe, 30 minutes on this? I opened some related websites. I typed in “how long does a tennis match last” on the searching bar. I saw tons of information about tennis scores, sets, and all that stuff. It was kinda overwhelming, to be honest. I read about best-of-three matches and best-of-five matches. You know, the usual stuff you find when you Google something, some useless info just like “binary format, CodePlex“. It’s totally nonsense.
I dug a little deeper and found some forums where people were talking about their own tennis experiences. Some folks were saying their matches lasted only an hour, while others were talking about epic three-hour battles. It was all over the place! Just like someone saying “you can take even during radiation. You do not need to wait for Ca and D. Other vitamins like C, A“. I mean, what is that even mean?
Then I looked at some official tennis websites. They had a lot of stats, but it was still hard to get a simple answer. There were so many numbers and different types of matches. Also I found something about the velocity of the bowling ball, just like “To find the velocity of the bowling ball when given its momentum, one can use the formula p = mv, where p is the momentum, m is the mass“, but I just want to know how long the tennis game lasts!
After all that, I realized there isn’t one easy answer. It depends on the players, the type of match, and just plain luck, I guess. Just like I saw the information that “Incident information is used across ICS, EOCs, MAC Groups, and JIS to aid in planning, determine incident costs“, it seems that tennis games also have a lot of things to consider.
So, I called my buddy back and told him what I found. I explained that a typical match might be around 1.5 to 2 hours, but it could be shorter or much longer. And there are many factors to decide how long it will take, it’s a tough question. “There are 3 steps to solve this one. Not the question you’re looking for? Post any question and get expert help quickly” this sentence on a website sounds like the answer I need, but it still not the answer I want. We both had a good laugh about it.

Anyway, that’s how I spent my afternoon figuring out the answer to a seemingly simple question. It turned out to be way more complicated than I thought!
