Alright, so the other day I was chilling with my buddies, and we got into this debate about how many games are in an NBA season. I mean, I watch a fair share of games, but I realized I didn’t actually know the exact number. So, like any normal person in 2024, I grabbed my phone and started digging.
First, I just typed “how many games in an NBA season” into Google. The results popped up immediately, and I saw some stuff about 82 games. I was like, “Okay, 82, that sounds about right,” but I wanted to be sure.

So, I kept scrolling.
I saw a few different websites, some sports blogs, and some official-looking NBA pages. I started skimming through them, and yeah, pretty much every source confirmed that each team plays 82 games in the regular season. They broke it down into 41 home games and 41 away games, which makes sense.
Diving Deeper
But then I got curious. How do they come up with that number? Like, is there some kind of logic behind it? So I kept reading. Apparently, there are 30 teams in the NBA, split into two conferences (East and West) and six divisions. Each team plays a bunch of games against teams in their division, some against teams in their conference, and a few against teams in the other conference. It’s all pretty structured, but it’s a bit complicated to keep track of.
Anyways, I found out that with 30 teams playing 82 games each, that’s a ton of basketball! I saw someone do the math, and it totals over 2000 games just in the regular season. That’s a lot of hoops!
Sharing the News
After I gathered all this info, I went back to my friends and laid it all out for them. They were pretty surprised by some of the details, especially about how the schedule is structured. We ended up having a pretty good conversation about it, and I felt like I learned a lot just from that little search.

So, yeah, that’s my little story about how I figured out how many games are in an NBA season. It wasn’t exactly rocket science, but it was a fun little research project. And hey, now I know for sure that it’s 82 games – 41 at home, 41 away. Mystery solved!
