So, I’ve always wanted a tennis court, right? Sounds fancy, but really, I just wanted a space to play without booking a court every time. I did some digging, asked around, and finally got to building one. I thought I’d share the whole journey with you guys, in case you’re thinking about doing the same.
First off, I had to figure out the size. I learned that a standard doubles court is about 78 feet long and 36 feet wide. That’s roughly 2,808 square feet. I measured my backyard, did some math, and realized I could squeeze one in, but it would be a tight fit. I decided to go for it anyway cause, why not? It’s my dream, right?

Next up was the cost. I read online that the average price to build a tennis court is around $30,000. Some folks said they got it done for as low as $16,000, while others paid closer to $55,000. It seemed like a pretty wide range, and I was hoping I’d be on the lower end of that spectrum. I mean, who wants to overpay?
I started getting quotes from different contractors. The first guy came in at $35,000, which was a bit more than I wanted to spend. The second quote was way higher, almost $45,000! I was starting to get a little worried. But then, the third contractor quoted me $28,000, and I thought, “Bingo!” We had a deal.
We broke ground, and the construction began. They started by leveling the area and putting in the base. That was a whole lot of digging and moving dirt around. It was kind of cool seeing the space transform, even though it was messy. Then, they poured the concrete surface. Watching that was pretty interesting, it was like a giant puzzle coming together.
After the surface was done, they installed the net and the fence. I went with a standard chain-link fence because it’s durable and, well, cheaper. The net was easy, just strung it up between the posts. I could see the court taking shape, and I was getting excited. I could almost picture myself playing on it!
The final touch was the lighting. I wanted to be able to play at night, so I got some lights installed around the court. They weren’t super expensive, but they made a huge difference. Now I can play whenever I want, day or night.

Final Thoughts
All in all, the project took about six weeks from start to finish. It was a bit of a rollercoaster, with some unexpected challenges along the way. But in the end, it was totally worth it. I have my very own tennis court, and it’s awesome!
The total cost came out to be around $29,500. That included everything: the court, the fence, the net, and the lights. It was a bit more than the lowest estimates I found online, but I’m happy with the result. Plus, I learned a ton through the whole process.
If you’re thinking about building your own tennis court, I say go for it! It’s a lot of work, but it’s incredibly rewarding. Just be prepared for some surprises, and make sure you get quotes from multiple contractors. And most importantly, have fun with it! It’s your court, after all.
