So, I’ve been wanting to get into tennis lately, but here’s the catch – I don’t really have anyone to play with. Yeah, I know, it sounds a bit sad, but hey, life happens. I decided, “Screw it, I’m gonna learn to play tennis by myself.”
First things first, I needed a place to play. I don’t have a tennis court in my backyard, unfortunately. But I do have a pretty solid garage door and a big wall at the local park. I figured those would do the trick. I grabbed my racket and a can of those orange/green dot tennis balls cause i heard they are good for practice, and headed out.

I started by just hitting the ball against the garage door. Let me tell you, it’s harder than it looks! The ball comes back at you fast, and it takes some serious hand-eye coordination to keep it going. But I kept at it. I focused on my grip, my stance, and just tried to get a feel for the racket.
After a while, I started to get the hang of it. I could actually keep a rally going for a few hits! It felt great. I practiced my forehand, my backhand, and even tried a few volleys. It was definitely a workout. My wrist started to feel it after a while, but it was a good kind of sore, you know?
Next, I went to the park to try the wall there. It was a bit different because the wall was bigger, so I had more space to work with. I could practice hitting the ball harder and experiment with different angles. I even started working on my serve by tossing the ball up and hitting it against the wall.
Here’s what I learned after a few sessions of playing tennis by myself:
- It’s totally doable. You don’t need a partner to learn the basics of tennis.
- It’s a great workout. You’ll definitely break a sweat, and it’s a fun way to get some exercise.
- It takes patience. You’re not going to be a pro overnight. But if you stick with it, you’ll see improvement.
- It’s actually kind of fun. Even though I was playing by myself, I still enjoyed it. There’s something satisfying about hitting a ball against a wall and seeing how long you can keep it going.
So, yeah, that’s my story of how I started learning to play tennis by myself. It’s not glamorous, and I’m definitely not ready for Wimbledon yet, but it’s a start. I encourage anyone out there who’s thinking about learning tennis to just go for it, even if you don’t have a partner. You might surprise yourself! And honestly I think if i want to play with others, I might try joining a club or something – gotta put myself out there, right?
I encourge anyone out there who’s thinking about learning tennis to just go for it, even if you don’t have a partner. You might surprise yourself!

I continue to practice against the wall every day and can now keep hitting for a long time.
I am a strong man now.
hahahaha.
