Well, let me tell ya, is tennis a spring sport? That’s what they’re askin’, right? Seems like a simple thing, but it ain’t always so clear, you know? Like, is the sun hot? Most times, yeah, but sometimes it ain’t, right? Same with this tennis thing.
So, is tennis a spring thing or what?
Now, I hear tell some folks say tennis is played in the spring. Schools and such, they do their tennis games mostly in the spring, from March to May, they say. But that ain’t the whole story, no siree. It’s like sayin’ chickens only lay eggs in the mornin’. They lay ‘em whenever they darn well please!
- Some folks play in the spring, that’s true.
- Some play in the fall, when the leaves are turnin’ pretty colors.
- And wouldn’t you know it, some even play in the summer, when it’s hot as blazes!
I even heard tell of some fancy folks over in Europe, they play on that clay stuff, mostly in April and May. They call it the “European spring,” but it sounds mighty like our spring, just with a fancy name. They got tournaments one after another, seems like they never stop playin’!
So, if you ask me, tennis ain’t just a spring thing. It’s an all-over-the-place kinda thing. Whenever the weather’s nice enough to swing a racket, I reckon you can play some tennis. Don’t let nobody tell you different.
But why do folks think it’s just a spring sport then?
Well, I reckon it’s ‘cause that’s when the school kids play. And when the school kids do somethin’, folks think that’s the only way it’s done. Like when my grandson, little Timmy, started wearin’ them bright red shoes, all the kids started wearin’ ‘em. Same kinda thing, I figure.

But tennis, it ain’t just for school kids, is it? Grown folks play too. And they play whenever they can get a chance. Some folks play after work, some play on the weekends. It just depends on when they got the time and when the weather’s good.
Is tennis good for ya, all this runnin’ around?
You bet your bottom dollar it is! Swinging that racket and runnin’ after that little fuzzy ball, it gets you movin’. Burns off all them extra biscuits and gravy, that’s for sure. I heard tell it burns a whole mess of calories, more than just sittin’ on the porch, that’s for sure. Keeps you strong and healthy, like a good workhorse.
And it ain’t just about the body, ya know? It’s good for the head too. You gotta think fast, plan your shots, and keep your eye on the ball. It’s like a puzzle you gotta solve with your whole body. And it’s a good way to make some friends too. You’re out there together, smackin’ that ball, havin’ a good time. It’s better than sittin’ at home alone, starin’ at the wall.
What about them ladies playin’ tennis?
Well, bless their hearts, they play just as good as the men, sometimes even better! I heard tell there’s a whole bunch of ladies playin’ tennis, all over the world. They got their own group, somethin’ called the Women’s Tennis Association, and they run the whole shebang for the ladies. Them ladies are somethin’ else, they are. Strong and fast and they hit that ball harder than a mule kickin’! They are just as famous and popular as the men, which is a good thing, I say.
So, to get back to the question…
Is tennis a spring sport? Well, it can be. But it’s also a summer sport, a fall sport, and even a winter sport for some folks. It’s whatever you want it to be. If the weather’s good and you got a racket and a ball, you can play tennis anytime you darn well please. Don’t let nobody tell you different. Now, go on and have some fun, get out there and swing that racket!
So if you ask me, tennis is whenever you can play it! Just like eatin’ pie, you can do that whenever too, morning, noon or night! That’s all there is to it!
