Well, well, well, you young folks wonder, is there a women’s baseball league today? Back in my day, we didn’t have much, but we sure loved to play ball. Nowadays, it seems like girls can do anything, even play baseball like the men! It’s about time, I reckon. We waited long enough, over 70 years! That’s longer than I been alive!
I heard tell of this new league, a women’s pro baseball league. They call it, uh, WPBL, I think? Sounds fancy. They say it’s gonna start up in 2026. That’s a ways off, but good things come to those who wait, as they say. This WPBL, it’s gonna be a big deal, with teams all over the country. Not just some little local thing, you know?

You know, it’s about time the girls got a chance. I remember hearing about those Rockford Peaches, way back when. They played from, oh, 1943 to 1954, or somethin’ like that. They were part of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Those Peaches, they played in every season, just like the South Bend Blue Sox. They must have been good to stick around that long. Those gals, they were tough. Real tough.
And there was this other woman, Effa somethin’. Effa Manley. They say she changed baseball a whole lot. She was important, real important. They even put her in that Baseball Hall of Fame. First woman ever, I hear! That’s somethin’, ain’t it? Shows you what a woman can do if she sets her mind to it.
But then, things got all messed up. This fella, Wrigley, he lost a bunch of money startin’ up those teams. It was a non-profit thing so he didn’t make any money back. And then the war was gonna end sooner than he thought, and all them men players was comin’ back to baseball. So, things just kinda fizzled out, I guess.
Then in ’52, they went and banned women from playin’ in the big leagues, or even the little leagues that were connected to ’em. Can you believe that? Banned! Like we weren’t good enough. Took ’em forty years to change that silly rule. Forty years! What a waste.
Now, it seems things are lookin’ up again for women’s baseball. They got this national team, and they’re gonna announce their schedule later. I hope they play near here. I’d sure like to see ’em. Maybe I’ll bring a pie. I make a mean apple pie. It’s important to support our women, don’t you think? They work just as hard as the men, maybe even harder.

- These girls today, they got a real opportunity.
- This WPBL, it’s a big chance for ’em.
- They can show the world what they can do.
- It’s a good time to be a woman in sports, I reckon.
- I hope they make the most of it.
I don’t know all the details about this new league, but I know it’s somethin’ special. They’re building something, you know? Something that us older folks only dreamed of. These gals today, they are lucky and I hope they make good use of it.
So, to answer your question, yes, there’s gonna be a women’s baseball league. And it’s gonna be great, you just wait and see. It’s about time, I tell ya. About time. These women, they have waited and waited. Now it’s their turn at bat, and I hope they hit a home run!
I hope these young gals don’t get too big for their britches, though. Remember where you came from, I always say. And be grateful for the chance you got. Us old folks, we paved the way, you know. We fought for every little bit of progress. They should remember that and be grateful. And play hard. Play real hard and make us proud.
This is exciting. I hope this league goes on for a long time. It would be nice to think that one day, little girls can grow up dreamin’ of playin’ professional baseball, just like the boys do. That’s the way it should be, don’t you think? Equal opportunity. It’s a good thing. A real good thing. This women’s baseball, it’s here to stay. And that’s just wonderful.
