Okay, so the other day, I was itching for a game. You know, something active, but not, like, super strenuous. My buddy suggested pickleball, and I was like, “Pickle-what-now?” Turns out, it’s this paddle sport that’s kinda like tennis, ping pong, and badminton all smushed together. Sounds fun, right?
So, first things first, I needed to figure out where the heck to even play this game. I don’t have any fancy club memberships or anything. So, it was time to research. I learned that, at some public tennis courts, you are able to play pickleball on them!

My local park has some tennis courts that are usually pretty empty, so I figured, “Why not?” I grabbed my tennis racket (yeah, I know, wrong equipment, I learned later), some balls, and dragged my friend out to the court. The tennis net is taller, and of course, the court’s bigger. Also, I didn’t have a pickleball paddle. But I did have a tennis racket, a wiffle ball, and a friend, so I thought I’d be fine.
We started just hitting the ball back and forth, trying to get a feel for it. Let me tell you, a tennis racket and a wiffle ball on a tennis court? Not exactly the ideal pickleball experience. The ball kept going everywhere, the net was way too high, and we were basically just chasing the ball around like a couple of goofballs.
The Improvisation Begins!
- Lowering the Net (Sort Of): We couldn’t actually lower the tennis net, so we just kinda pretended it was lower. We tried to aim our shots as if the net was about 34 inches high in the center, which is the official pickleball net height.
- Making Up the Lines: This was the tricky part. Pickleball courts are smaller than tennis courts. We didn’t have any tape or chalk, so we just used our imagination and the existing tennis court lines as a rough guide. We basically played in a smaller rectangle within the tennis court, guessing where the “kitchen” (that’s the non-volley zone near the net) should be.
- Using Tennis balls instead of Pickleballs: Using tennis balls instead of wiffle balls made all the difference. It helped us really get a feel for how the game is supposed to be played.
It wasn’t perfect, not even close, but we actually started to get the hang of it! We figured out some basic shots, learned (the hard way) about the non-volley zone, and even managed to have a few decent rallies. It was definitely more of a workout than I expected, and we were laughing the whole time.
Final Thoughts
So, can you play pickleball on a tennis court? Absolutely! Especially if you are prepared, which I was not! If you’re just looking for some casual fun and don’t mind bending the rules a bit, it’s totally doable. But, if you want to get serious about pickleball, I’d recommend finding an actual pickleball court, or taking the proper equipment to measure, tape, and create a makeshift pickleball court inside the tennis court. I’ve definitely added “get a real pickleball paddle” to my to-do list!
