Now, some folks get all fancy and say table tennis don’t use “sets” at all. They call ’em “games” instead. Says it’s the best of an odd number of games. Most times it’s best of five or best of seven these days. Each game, you gotta get to eleven points, but you gotta be two points ahead, see? Can’t just squeak by with one measly point.
- Best of three: Win two games.
- Best of five: Win three games.
- Best of seven: Win four games.
It’s kinda like tennis, that fancy sport with the bigger balls and the bigger rackets. They play sets too, best of three or best of five. But table tennis is quicker, you know? Faster paced. Them fellas are movin’ and shakin’ like chickens with their heads cut off. Most of them ping pong matches, they last maybe ten, maybe thirty-five minutes. Unless them players are stubborn, then it can go on a bit longer, I reckon.
And get this, even the size of the table matters! A bigger table means more runnin’ around, more time chasin’ that little ball. It all adds up, you see. So, next time someone asks you how many sets in table tennis, you tell ’em, “It depends!” It depends on who’s playin’, where they’re playin’, and what kind of rules they’re usin’. It ain’t that simple, like I said.
Them Olympics, they got their own rules too. Usually, it’s best of five or best of seven games there too. And they play to eleven points, gotta win by two. But if they get to ten-ten, then it’s a whole different ball game. They keep playin’ till someone gets two points ahead. It can go on and on, sometimes. It’s like them young’uns fightin’ over the last piece of pie, nobody wants to give up.
