Ah, well, if we’re gonna talk ’bout the 2016-17 Football League Championship, ya better sit down, ’cause there’s a lotta things I gotta tell ya. Ya see, that season was the first one where they started callin’ it the “EFL Championship” instead of just the Championship, all thanks to some sponsorship business, I reckon. But don’t let that fancy name fool ya, it’s still all about football, and a whole lotta excitement.
So, let me start by tellin’ ya, this season saw some big teams and big names gettin’ into the mix. Now, at the top of the pile, ya had Newcastle United who, bless ’em, really showed their strength that year. They finished up top of the league with 93 points, which is no small feat, mind ya! The poor teams at the bottom had a much harder time, though, and some of ’em even got relegated down to the next division.

But let’s not forget Brighton & Hove Albion – those fellas gave Newcastle a real run for their money, finishing second with 89 points, just a little shy of takin’ the crown. Both them teams earned themselves a spot in the Premier League for the next season. So, hats off to them!
Now, third place was Reading, who didn’t make it straight up but gave it a good go. They had to go through the playoff rounds, where things got mighty interesting. Playoffs are always a big deal, ain’t they? They bring a lotta drama and suspense – real nail-biters, if ya ask me!
Sheffield Wednesday also had a solid season, sittin’ in fourth place, and they too had their eyes on that playoff prize. But in the end, it was Huddersfield Town and Fulham who went through to the playoff final, with Huddersfield comin’ out on top, securing their place in the Premier League for the first time in years. Now that was a real fairy tale story if ya ask me!
Of course, there were a few changes behind the scenes, too. Some managers got the boot, and a couple of clubs found themselves lookin’ for new leaders. Teams like Stevenage and Walsall made some changes early on, but that’s the nature of football, isn’t it? Sometimes ya just gotta switch things up.
Now, not every team made it out of the season with a smile on their face. There were some clubs that got sent down to the lower leagues, like Rotherham United, who really struggled that year. They ended up bottom of the table, poor things, only makin’ 23 points in total. And then there were teams like Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers, who didn’t do much better but somehow managed to survive, just about clingin’ on.

As for the football itself, oh lord, we saw some real wild matches. There was drama, last-minute goals, and moments that made ya wanna pull yer hair out, like when teams barely scraped by with a draw or when a team like Nottingham Forest was fightin’ off relegation at the last minute. It kept everyone on the edge of their seat!
The 2016-17 season also saw a lotta managers comin’ and goin’. Some were sacked, some moved on to new jobs, and some just plain left. You had Teddy Sheringham gettin’ sacked from Stevenage, and Lee Johnson leavin’ Barnsley to take a job at Bristol City. Change was in the air, but that’s football for ya, always movin’ and shufflin’.
So, at the end of the day, the 2016-17 Championship was one for the books. It had excitement, it had heartbreak, and it had surprises. Newcastle and Brighton goin’ up was no surprise, but Huddersfield’s playoff win? Now that was somethin’ else. If you were a football fan, ya couldn’t ask for much more than that.
Anyway, if you want more stats and details about how things went down that year, you can always look up the league tables and see who did what. But I reckon, after all this ramblin’, ya probably got a good sense of how that season played out.
