Okay, so I was watching a ton of football last season, and this question popped into my head: just how many safeties were there in the NFL in 2022? I mean, safeties are kinda rare, right? So I decided to figure it out.
First, I tried just Googling it. You know, “NFL safeties 2022.” I got a bunch of articles about individual games and some player stats, but nothing giving me the total number. Total bust.

So, I thought, maybe there’s some NFL stats website that has this. I went to the official NFL site, but honestly, it was a bit overwhelming. So many stats, and I couldn’t find a simple “total safeties” number.
Digging Deeper
Then I remembered a few other sports sites, like ESPN and some others. I spent a good hour clicking around, looking through season stats, team stats, all that stuff. Still no luck. It was getting frustrating!
I even tried some football forums. Figured maybe some hardcore fans would know. I found a couple of threads talking about safeties, but again, nothing with the actual total for 2022. Lots of arguing about which safety was the best, though. Go figure.
Getting My Hands Dirty
Finally, I figured, screw it, I’ll just do this myself. I decided to go through game logs. I mean, how many games are there in a season? It’s a lot, but I was determined.
- I started with one of those sports schedule sites, listing every game of the 2022 NFL season.
- Then, for each game, I found a recap or box score that would mention if a safety occurred.
- I made a simple spreadsheet, you know, just to keep track. Game number, teams, and a “yes” or “no” for safety.
It took forever. Seriously, hours and hours of clicking, reading, and typing. My eyes were starting to cross. But I kept going, game after game, week after week.

Finally, after all that work, I had my number! I just counted up all the “yes” entries in my spreadsheet.I felt very nice at that moment!
It was a pain, but I finally have a pretty solid answer on how many safeties happened in the NFL during 2022.
