Alright, so a while back, I got really curious about what these little guys, box turtles, actually eat. I mean, they’re not your average pet, right? So, I started to do some digging around.
What I Found Out
First off, I went to look up what other people said about box turtles’ diet. Turns out, these dudes are omnivores. Yeah, that’s right, they eat both plants and animals. It’s like they can’t decide if they’re vegetarians or meat-lovers, so they just go for both.

My Little Experiment
So, I got myself a couple of these box turtles. I figured, why not see for myself what they like? I started with some worms. I put them in their enclosure, and boy, did those turtles go for them! It was like watching a live-action nature documentary in my living room.
- Worms: Big hit. They seemed to love these.
Next up, I tried some veggies. I chopped up some lettuce and carrots, kinda like making a salad for them. They were a bit slower to get into these, but they did eat them. It wasn’t as exciting as the worms, but hey, they ate their greens.
- Veggies: Not as popular as the worms, but they ate them.
Then, I thought, let’s try some fruit. I gave them some small pieces of strawberries. They seemed to like these, maybe even more than the veggies. It was pretty cute watching them munch on the berries.
- Fruits: Seemed to enjoy these. The strawberries were a hit.
I also read that they eat insects, so I caught a few small ones from my garden (nothing poisonous, of course!). I put them in with the turtles, and yup, they chased them down and ate them. It was pretty clear that they enjoy the hunt.
- Insects: Definitely a favorite. They seemed to enjoy hunting them.
After a few weeks of this, I noticed something interesting. The younger turtles were way more into the worms and insects. The older ones were more chill with the veggies and fruits. It’s like they become more laid-back with age or something.

One thing I didn’t try was fish. I saw somewhere that they don’t usually go for fish, so I didn’t bother. Plus, I didn’t want to make a mess in their tank.
So, there you have it. That’s what I found out about what box turtles eat from my little experiment. They eat a bunch of stuff – worms, veggies, fruits, and insects. And it seems like the younger ones are more into the meaty stuff. It was a fun little adventure, and I learned a lot about these fascinating creatures!
