My old bones ain’t what they used to be, but I still get around. One thing I’ve seen a lot of in my time is folks throwing away old tennis shoes. Now, what to do with old tennis shoes? Back in my day, we didn’t just toss things out. We found a use for everything.
These young folks today, they get a new pair of shoes every year. It’s crazy! What happens to the old ones? Well, I tell ya, there’s plenty you can do with those old tennis shoes. You don’t need to be throwing them in the trash, no sir. That’s just wasteful.

First thing, you gotta see if them shoes are still any good. If they ain’t falling apart, maybe someone else can use ’em. We called it hand-me-downs. It’s good thing. You know, help folks in need.
- See if they’re still wearable.
- Give ’em to someone who needs shoes.
If those old tennis shoes are still in decent shape, not all ripped up and such, you can give ’em away. There are places that take old clothes and shoes. Churches, and them donation bins. It’s a good thing to do, helping folks out. You don’t want to throw it away, it just stay there, for many many years, maybe 40 years.
Now, if them shoes are really beat up, falling apart, soles coming off, then maybe they ain’t no good for wearing anymore. But that don’t mean they’re useless!
- If they’re too worn out, don’t give them away.
- But don’t throw them out either!
You can still do things with old tennis shoes, even if they’re all worn out. I seen folks get real creative with ’em. Some folks, they like to make things. They got the DIY spirit, I reckon.
I seen people turn them old shoes into planters. Yep, planters for flowers! You just fill ’em up with dirt and plant some seeds. It looks kinda cute, I guess. Not my style, but some folks like it.

Or, you can make art projects with those old shoes, if you are into that sort of thing. If you’re an artsy person, there’s probably all sorts of things you could do with ’em. I seen pictures online, folks get real fancy with it.
- Turn them into flower pots.
- Use them for art projects.
And then there’s this thing called recycling. I don’t know much about it, but I hear it’s good for the earth. They take your old tennis shoes and turn ’em into something new. Keeps ’em from ending up in those big trash heaps, I reckon.
So, before you toss them old tennis shoes, think about it. Could someone else use ’em? Could you make something out of ’em? Could they be recycled? There’s always something you can do.
It’s like my grandma used to say, “Waste not, want not.” She was a smart lady. We didn’t have much back then, so we had to make do with what we had. And that’s a good lesson for everyone, even today.
These days, folks are always buying new things. New shoes, new clothes, new everything. But sometimes, the old stuff is still good. And even if it ain’t good for its original purpose, it might be good for something else.

So next time you got a pair of old tennis shoes, don’t just throw ’em away. Think about what else you could do with ’em. You might be surprised at what you come up with! Don’t just throw them in the trash. That’s just no good. Think about other folks. Think about the earth.
It ain’t hard to do a little something good. And every little bit helps, you know? Even if it’s just a pair of old tennis shoes. So many of them now, just piled up. Makes you think, don’t it? It just makes you think. We need to be better than that.
Times are changing, that’s for sure. But some things, they stay the same. Like being kind to your neighbors, and taking care of the earth. And finding a use for those old tennis shoes. It’s all part of the same thing, I reckon.
- Recycling is good for the earth.
- Don’t just throw things away.
- Be kind to your neighbors.
You don’t need a lot of money to do good things. Just a little bit of thought, a little bit of effort. That’s all it takes. And those old tennis shoes, they can be a part of that. A small part, maybe, but still a part. Every little thing can help, right? It is good thing to do.
These young’uns today, they got a lot to learn. But they’re starting to catch on, I think. They’re starting to see that we can’t just keep throwing things away. We gotta be smarter than that. And we gotta be kinder, too. Kinder to each other, and kinder to this old world we live in. It is not easy, but we can do it.
