Okay, here’s my blog post about whether or not to wear underwear under a football girdle, based on my own experience and written in a casual, personal style:
Alright, so the other day I was getting ready for my flag football game (yeah, I’m still trying to relive the glory days), and I had this moment of, “Wait, am I supposed to wear underwear under this thing?” I’m talking about the football girdle, that padded contraption you wear around your waist and hips.

I’ve played sports my whole life, but sometimes you just blank on the basics. I honestly couldn’t remember what I did back in high school. So, I did what any reasonable person would do: I started digging around, asking my buddies, and trying stuff out.
My Experiment (and a Little TMI)
First, I went commando. Just the girdle, nothing else. Felt kinda weird, to be honest. The girdle material isn’t exactly, uh, soft. Plus, there was a little too much…freedom…if you know what I mean. It just didn’t feel secure, and I was worried about things shifting around during the game.
Next, I tried my usual boxer briefs. This felt way better. The extra layer provided some much-needed comfort and, frankly, some support. The boxer briefs kind of held everything in place, and the girdle felt more like a protective layer instead of a weird, scratchy second skin.
After that, I decided to see how different types of underwear perform with my girdle.
- Boxer briefs: The Goldilocks option. Just right.
- Briefs: These worked okay, too, but they felt a little too snug under the girdle. Bunching was a minor issue.
- Compression shorts: Some of my buddies swear by these. For me, it felt like overkill. The girdle already has built-in compression, so adding another layer just felt restrictive. I was starting to feel like a sausage casing.
- Commando: Nope nope nope. I did not have a good experience with this method.
The Verdict
After my highly scientific (not really) experimentation, I’ve landed firmly in the “wear underwear” camp. Specifically, boxer briefs. For me, it’s the perfect balance of comfort, support, and, well, keeping everything where it’s supposed to be. I got on the field, and I was ready to go.

Ultimately, it’s gonna come down to personal preference. Try a few different things, see what feels best for you. But if you’re on the fence, I definitely recommend throwing on a pair of boxer briefs under that girdle. Your future self (and your teammates, probably) will thank you.
